Disguise and stealing in Fake an Egg

This is the loop the game is named for. Fake an Egg was built as an answer to the egg stealing games: instead of only guarding your own eggs, you become one, and you hunt the hunters.

How the fake egg loop works

Your pen holds a green pipe, the disguise station. Jump in and a Select Disguise menu opens, listing every egg form you have unlocked, each with its cash payout printed on it. Pick a form and your avatar becomes that egg. Walk into the central yard and stand among the real eggs, copying their idle hop. If another player buys you, two things happen: you are paid the listed payout for that disguise, and the buyer carries you into their own pen and sets you on a nest, inside their fence, next to their pets.

That is the moment the loop turns. Drop the disguise, grab their best pet, and run it back across the arena to your own pen. The owner will chase you and can hit you with a bat to knock you back, and the pet only counts when you reach your own pen, where it starts earning for you. Stealing without a disguise, by walking into a pen and grabbing a pet directly, also works, but the disguise route puts you inside with an invitation, which is why it is the signature play.

What disguises pay

Five payouts are documented in public sources: $30 as a Bunny, $61.0K as an Elephant, $900.0K as a Velociraptor, $2.4M as a Triceratops and $11.0M as a Mosasaurus. Higher forms unlock as you progress, and the payout alone can fund your next egg tier. Treat the payout as the bonus, though. The pet you run home is the prize.

How fakes get caught

Defenders are not helpless, and you should play as if every buyer owns a scanner. A scanner, bought at the purple SCANNERS stall and used at close range, prints green REAL text over a genuine egg and exposes a disguised player as FAKE. Scanners only cover their own rarity and below, so a cheap scanner cannot clear a high tier egg, but a prepared buyer with the right tier can clear yours. Behaviour gives fakes away too: real eggs hop in place with a plain idle pattern, so a disguise that drifts, repositions or reacts to being watched invites a scan. Stand still, hop like set dressing, and choose busy moments when the yard is crowded and buyers are rushing.

Defending your own pen

Scan before you buy anything at Rare and above, and treat an unscanned expensive egg as a risk you chose, not bad luck. Keep your strongest pet placement in mind: a stolen pet has to be carried across the whole arena, so the seconds after a hatch are when your pen is most exposed. And if you do carry a thief home, the chase is winnable: a bat hit knocks the runner back, and the pet is only lost when it crosses into the thief's pen.
